What Is Spay and Neuter Surgery?

Respectively, spay and neuter surgeries are surgical procedures intended to sterilize female and male pets. Spay surgery involves the removal of a female pet’s ovaries and uterus, while a neuter surgery removes a male pet’s testicles.

Are Spay and Neuter Surgeries Safe?

Although all surgeries are considered to be serious procedures, spay and neuter surgeries are incredibly routine and common. As a result, most veterinarians have plenty of experience performing them. Plus, the benefits of spaying or neutering your pet far outweigh any potential procedural risks.

The Benefits of Spay and Neuter Surgery

Reduced Risk of Disease

Sterilizing pets prevents them from developing several cancers and other diseases associated with the reproductive organs. It also reduces the amount of contact they have with other animals throughout their lives, limiting their risk of exposure to contagious diseases. As a result, spayed or neutered pets tend to live longer lives.

Improved Behavior

In addition, spaying and neutering results in several behavioral benefits. Sterilized pets are less likely to wander, act out aggressively, vocalize inappropriately, or mark their territory.

Stronger Community

Sterilizing pets is also good for your community as a whole. Fewer unwanted litters reduce the strain on pet shelters while giving homeless pets a better chance of finding their forever homes.

What to Expect During Your Pet's Spay or Neuter Surgery with Advanced Mobile Vet Care

Preparing for the Procedure

We will provide you with instructions for your pet’s care before surgery. This will likely include restricting food and water. Prior to your pet’s surgery, our veterinarian will perform a physical examination of your pet and take a blood test to ensure he or she is healthy enough to undergo general anesthesia and the procedure at hand.

During Surgery

During surgery, we use only the highest quality medications and state-of-the-art surgical tools designed to minimize patient recovery time. Pets are sedated with general anesthesia to ensure their safety and comfort. Throughout the procedure, we vigilantly monitor patients’ vital signs and conditions. We will notify you as soon as your pet’s procedure is complete.

Post-Operative Care

Following your pet’s procedure, recovery typically happens at home. We will provide you with instructions for restricting your pet’s activities, caring for their wounds, and also administering any medications, if necessary.
